Uganda: Interpol Impounds MP Otada's Lexus in Kenya
A Luxury four wheel-drive car belonging to a Ugandan member of Parliament is one of those that were impounded in the on-going crackdown on stolen cars in Kenya.
The black Lexus with tinted screens belongs to Mr Sam Amooti Otada, the MP for Kavindi County in Masindi district. Otada's vehicle was seized yesterday and is being kept at Eldoret police yard.
The car which was driven by Otada's driver, Mr Emmanuel Okumu, was on its way to Nairobi for servicing.
The crackdown on vehicles by Interpol currently in Kenya and Tanzania, is also expected to start in Uganda anytime.
According to yesterday's Daily Nation, a big number of four-wheel drive vehicles had vanished from Kenyan streets because of the operation.
Interpol, which is being assisted by detectives from the three sister countries targets four-wheel drive cars suspected to be stolen from Japan, South Africa, Britain and other Eurpean countries and get exported to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania through Dubai.
Otada could not be reached yesterday for a comment.
When contacted, the acting Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Patrick Onyango, said he had not yet learnt about the seizure of the said vehicle.
Though the operation is expected in Uganda anytime next week, the deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr Julius Odwe and the CID chief, Ms Elizabeth Kuteesa, have not commented on the issue.
"Please don't let the rat out of the bag because much as you want the public to be informed, it is premature now because this operation is considered a secret," said Odwer.
However, URA's deputy Public and Corperation officer, Mr Paul Kyeyune, said URA will be ready to assist in the crackdown if approached. "We haven't been approached but we're ready to help. All I know is that there are about 20 foreign vehicles, most of them from DR Congo which were impounded last week for overstaying in the country."
